Grey Bay WAC Essay: What do you think?

What do your guys think about this essay that I wrote fro school?

Dear Editors of the Grey Bay Times,

I have found evidence about the Grey Bay fish kill. Ken Unballe is the one to blame. Here is the evidence that proves my claim.

Juan Tuno tested the water downstream from the water park. He saw only 1 flea in the water meaning that the chlorine is killing them. Usually, there would be around 15-17 water fleas in a healthy water stream but there wasn’t. This is the first piece of evidence that I have.

Looking at the schedule, the chemist was supposed to come and test the water on Tuesday and they would dump the chlorine water on Wednesday. This means that the tests mean nothing because he tested the water before the dumping of the water, therefore, the test results are inaccurate and don’t prove anything.

Take a look at these emails. They prove a lot about Ken’s suspicious acts:

The Board of Supervisors are having a meeting on whether we should be shut down. We’ve got to keep the public on our side, and make this chlorine thing go away. Before the board meeting, I’m ordering the water downstream from our dump pipes to be tested for chlorine by a chemist, but check out the water slide schedule, and I think you’ll know why the chemist should only collect samples on Tuesday night!

Ken

Another one says:
I guess the idea is, that if there is water fleas, then there is not too much chlorine because they're real sensitive to it or something. Any ideas about what to do? This is getting serious!

Ken

The last one says:
I like your idea about buying a bunch of water fleas and dumping them into the water just before the kid does the test. Can you be in charge of buying them and taking care of what needs to happen? Of course, this should all be kept confidential.

PS-let’s talk about a raise for you soon!

After looking at these emails, Ken is the one to blame in every possible way. However, he’s trying to prove that his water park is not causing the fish kill. In the board meeting, he says, “Members of the Board, our water slide has been great for this area. We bring in tourists, which helps the economy, and we keep kids off the streets. We put chlorine in the water to kill germs so our water is safe for kids. We're sure that the chlorine from our water slide isn't killing the fish, and here's why:We collected a sample of the water in the river downstream from the water slide, and we had it chemically tested for chlorine. Our chemist is here with the results.”
If you looked at all the evidence, it makes sense that Ken is the one to blame for the Grey Bay fish kill, therefore, we should either shut down the water park, or tell him to stop dumping water in the river.

An End to Eyedrops

DOGO News in the article, Stick-On Nanowafers Could Mean an End to Messy Eye Drops, explains how an invention, nano wafers are better than regular messy eye drops.

Citation:
"Stick-On Nanowafers Could Mean An End To Messy Eye Drops." DOGOnews. N.p., 22 Feb. 2015. Web. 26 Feb. 2015. <http://www.dogonews.com/2015/2/22/stick-on-nanowafers-could-mean-an-end-to-messy-eye-drops>.

Backward Looking:
I didn't know about the topic, but I did know what eyedrops were. I now know that nano wafers are clear, thin, medical disk that you apply to your eye and the medicine inside it dispenses. Unlike eyedrops, these "disks" are clean, effective, and stay in your eyes.

Inward Looking:
The information given changed my thoughts about eyedrops. My family has a lot of allergies and daily use eyedrops. I always thought that they were brilliant, but after reading this article, I think it's even more brilliant. One thing that amazes me is that nano wafers are compacted together, whereas eyedrops are messy and usually in one blink, they drip out of your eyes.

Outward Looking:
This article is advertising the pros of the nano wafer. This affects the community and future by making people want the invention. In the future, this could be the next new thing.

Forward Looking:
I would ask the author if there were any cons in the product. If there were, I would ask him to add that to the article because if the community thinks that it's all good, then they'll obviously buy it not knowing that there could be something wrong.

The Loneliest Whale in the World

DOGO News in the article, "The Quest To Seek Out 52 Hertz AKA The "Loneliest Whale in the World"' talks about a whale named, 52 Hertz. This whale has a higher pitched voice compared to other whales and therefore cannot communicate with its type.

Backward Looking:
I did not have any prior knowledge about 52 Hertz(the loneliest whale in the world). Now I know that Hertz is not able to communicate to other whales due to his rare high-pitched voice. Because of this, he has no friends, family, or spouses to connect with and talk to which is why he is known as the loneliest whale in the world.

Inward Looking:
I chose this article because I am interested in articles that sound interesting and facts that I did not know about before. This article had an affect on me because I feel like any whales or animals such as Hertz that have disabilities, we should do something to prevent loneliness.

Outward Looking:
This article affects the community by showing them that there could be animals or people in this world that are lonely and that we can make a difference and impact on that.

Forward Looking:
One question that I have is if there is anything we could do to make environment better and less lonely.
I would also ask the author if there are more lonely animals out there and if she could write an article about them too.

The Great Dress Debate

Summary:
It all began when someone posted a picture of a dress trying to figure out what color it was. Soon the post goes viral and scientists get involved.

Complete Citation:
"White And Gold Or Blue And Black? The Great Dress Debate!" DOGOnews. Jennifer Farrell, 6 Mar. 2015. Web. 9 Mar. 2015. <http://www.dogonews.com/2015/3/6/white-and-gold-or-blue-and-black-the-great-dress-debate>.

Backward-Looking:
I did not know much about the science behind the dress, but I did know that it was going viral between the colors. Now, I know that our human brain interprets different images. The angle and the light effects what people see. People that see the background as brightly illuminated see black and blue. However, people whose brains automatically see the poorly lit setting, see white and gold.

Inward-Looking:
My thoughts about this changed after reading the article. When I first saw the post about the dress, I thought, "People just have really weird eyes to see black and blue. Of course, the dress is white and gold.", but now I see that there is a science behind it, and the dress is actually black and blue.

Outward-Looking:
This article affects the future in the way that others would try similar things like this and get others motivated to find the science behind it. There's probably going to be someone who finds something else and a new science behind it.

Forward-Looking:
One question that I have for the author is, "Is there a way to change what you see in the picture, or does your mind just stick to what you have and refuses to think differently?"
A question I have for the person who took the picture is, "How did you take the picture?"

Meringue Cookies

hI eVeRyBoDy!
Lately, I've been into meringue cookies, that I created my own recipe! Please try it out and comment on how you did. You can also post pictures of them on the commenting section. I would <3 to see your recreations!

Meringue cookies are whipped up egg whites baked with a little flavoring. There are many variations such as lemon meringues, vanilla, orange, and more. This three ingredient recipe is so easy. Basically, a meringue cookie is crunchy on the inside, and fluffy and gooey on the inside. Some people prefer crunchier ones which takes a longer process, but this is how I like mines.

Recipe:
3 egg whites
pinch of cream of tarter(you can substitute with either salt or vinegar)
5 tbs of sugar

Step 1: Separate the eggs making sure the yolk doesn't spill in or touch the egg whites.

Step 2: Put the egg whites in a bowl along with the cream of tarter. Make sure that you bowl and attachments/whisk is clean. You can assure this by dipping a paper towel in vinegar and wiping up the equipment. If your bowl is not clean or there is other particles in the egg whites(besides the cream of tarter) they will not whip up.

Step 3:Whip up the egg whites with a whisk, electric mixer, or stand mixer.(I preferably use my kitchen aid stand mixer or sometimes just a hand held electric mixer. It take a long time to whip up the egg whites with just a whisk.)

Step 4:
Once you egg whites are foamy like this, add in your sugar one tablespoon at a time.
Make sure that you gradually add it in. If you don't, they will have more trouble whipping up.

Step 5:

These are the stages of your egg whites. At this point they should be at stage three, stiff peaks. Your egg whites should not be wilting like soft peaks, or over whipped. If they are over whipped, they will turn out wrinkly after baking.
At this point if you want to add your own little touch of flavor, you can put in an extract such as lemon extract or raspberry, or you can add zest and a little bit of vanilla..

Step 6:
Put your egg whites in a piping bag. I prefer to fit with a star tip to get a nice effect, but you could pipe it out with just the bag, or a Ziploc bag.
Another way to do this is to take two spoons and spoon it on.

Step 7: Pipe your meringues onto a tray lined with parchment paper. Before you do that, you can preheat your oven. If you want crunchy meringues, preheat your oven to 125 degrees F. If you want light meringues with a crisp outside and gooey inside, preheat to 300 degrees F.

Step 8: If you're going for crunchy, bake for 1 hour and open up the oven and leave it in there for 3 hours or overnight. If you're going for the inside outside contrast, bring down the oven heat to 275 degrees F and bake for fifteen min. or until lightly browned.

Step 8: Let the meringues cool for a few minutes and enjoy!
